Apple iCloud: the criticism

Apple’s latest product, the iCloud, has - as usual for an Apple launch - met with a storm of media interest. But not everyone’s convinced. Here’s a look at some of the criticism it’s been receiving on the web.

Steve Jobs delivers the keynote address at the 2011 Apple World Wide Developers Conference.

No full streaming
The guys at ReadWriteWeb are unimpressed. “Apple's new offer does not involve music streaming”, they say. “True, you can have your music collection synced across devices (up to 10 of them). But you will still have to download the music you want to play on to your iPhone or iPad or iPod Touch or Mac. You won't be able to access your entire collection and randomly shuffle between all the glorious gigabytes.” Google and Amazon will “breathe a sigh of relief”.

Only your own music
Over at MusicMachinery they make a related criticism: it’s only your own music you can listen to. They suggest that over the years, music companies have been pushing the “delusion” that you can buy music, but in fact you’re just “renting it until the next format change comes along”, and that a music subscription service is the logical extension of that. Paul Lamere says: “Apple (along with Amazon and Google) are going down the wrong path. The music cloud shouldn’t be a locker in the sky where I can put all the music I own, it should be the Celestial Jukebox – a place where all music is available for me to listen to.”
Evolver.fm concurs: “Apple’s music locker is a nice feature for those who like Apple’s hardware and software, but it’s not the cloud endgame: a Rhapsody- or Spotify-type music subscription service on steroids.”
Limited storage space
Most of your music won’t require storing: iCloud will recognise it and give you access to its iTunes version, rather than requiring you to store it. But if the music’s not on iTunes, you’ll have to upload it into the cloud yourself - and with a respectable but hardly voluminous 5Gb storage space in the cloud, you may find yourself short of room, as Rachel King at ZDNet asks: “What about movies and music not purchased via iTunes? Or other large collaborative files such as graphic-heavy presentations? That 5GB could go fast. Then again, it’s free so it’s hard to complain.” She also points out that “Uploading to the cloud could get expensive quickly” for 3G and 4G users, especially “if someone is constantly uploading new versions of documents, music files and apps all the time.”

No TV or video
FierceIPTV, the internet TV monitor, says that Apple has “missed the bullseye” by failing to provide streaming video and full syncing. “It does allow users to sync video content”, they say, but: “The process may be a drag because users will have to upload and download files in full between devices and iCloud.”
File it “in the ‘needs more work’ queue”, they say, although they expect more from Apple soon.
Apple have tried this before, and screwed it up
This isn’t Apple’s first venture into the cloud. Wired points out that: “iCloud will be Apple’s sequel to MobileMe, a paid online service for synchronizing personal information, such as your calendars, address books, e-mail and photos, across multiple devices. Tech observers agree that MobileMe has been one of Apple’s most embarrassingly flawed products, thanks to its extremely buggy launch and limited functionality.“
Worse still, even Mobile Me wasn’t the first: it was “itself a 2008 rebranding of .Mac, which began its life in 2000 as iDisk”, they say. Can they manage to get it right fourth time? And if they do, what will happen to the MobileMe users who’ve paid $99 a year for something they’re now giving away for free? “Apple has been known to offer refunds and price adjustments in the past, most notably after the price drop of the first iPhone in 2007, which settled an uproar amongst those who shelled out $599 rather than $399. Thus, Apple might find itself in such a pinch once iCloud launches this fall”, says Rachel King of ZDNet.

It’s not safe
In the wake of recent data scares, people are understandably wary of floating all their personal data and documents into the ether. Our own Adrian Hon writes: “Seventy-five million users’ passwords and personal data on Sony’s Playstation Network were recently accessed by hackers, handily demonstrating that even the biggest companies don’t have bulletproof security. If we are going to entrust all our data and work to a single company and a single point of failure, whether it’s Apple or Google or Amazon, we need to be confident that we’re safe. We also need to be aware that this isn’t all for our benefit, either. There are billions to be made from accurately targeting consumers with adverts and recommendations, and with a record of every piece of media we consume and purchase, companies can influence our tastes and behaviour in ever more subtle and powerful ways.”
The New Yorker agrees: “But how do you know that these companies are going to keep your e-mail, photographs, dissertation research, financial records, or notes on an article about the next Wikileaks from other corporations or from hackers or from governments? Ultimately, you don’t. The future of cloud-based companies depends upon maintaining privacy, but we use their products in the present. Accidents happen, smart people can fall for phishing scams, and thieves find ways of breaking into things, whether it’s the Kryptonite bike lock or Gmail.”

Care & Exercises for the Eye

Vitamins A, B and C are very essential for the good care of the eyes. Milk, butter, cod liver oil, egg yolk, yellow and orange coloured vegetables such as pumpkin, carrot, tomato, mango, papaya, melon as well as green leafy vegetables such as celery, parsley, spinach etc contain a large amount of vitamin A. 8 to 10 hours of sleep is a must for bright eyes.
To avoid eye strain

  • Do not read continuously in moving vehicles.
  • Do not stare too tong at anything without blinking the eyes. Blinking provides lubrication and relief from light.
  • Do not rub the eyes too hard.
  • To give momentary relief to the eyes, close the eyes with your palms so that no light can enter. Now open the eyes in the palm cup and stare into this darkness for a minute.

Exercises for eyes :
  • Lift the eyes to the ceiling and then to the floor. Repeat it for 10 times. Rest the eyes either by blinking rapidly or rubbing your palms together and covering your eyes with them. Do not press the eyes. Palming reduces strain and gives relaxation to eyes.
  • Look straight ahead at eye level, then slowly to left side at eye level and then to right side at eye level. Repeat it for 3 or 4 times.
  • Make a circle, first clockwise and then anti-clockwise, with the eyes. Repeat for 5 times.

  • Boil one cup of dried gooseberry with 4 cups of water. Add a pinch of sugar in it. Keep boiling till the quantity of the liquid reduces to one cup. Mix 2 cups of Mehendi, an egg, juice of a lemon and the gooseberry solution and apply on hair. Wash the hair after two hours.
Natural Conditioners
  • Henna is a herbal treatment with good conditioning abilities.
  • Egg white is a good conditioner for hair.
  • Deep condition with curd, beer and egg.
  • Mix a little vinegar in warm water and rinse your hair with this solution. This will add bounce to dull and lifeless hair.

summer health

THE TEMPERATURE is soaring and hot winds have already started to blow. Summertime is here, time to enjoy wearing cool and crisp cottons, head to the pool and enjoy chilled shakes and salads.
The season offers a great opportunity to nourish your body with numerous fresh food options, abandon the TV for outdoor activities, dress up in eyecatching fluorescent colours and enjoy the fragrance of fresh jasmine in the pots lining your balcony.
So make the most of the season.
The extra heat and longer days stress the body, pushing it to work harder than usual.
The heart, small intestines, stomach and spleen all work overtime to maintain healthy blood circulation, temperature regulation, digestion and hormone secretion.
Must-dos this month: Get a wellness makeover
In this period the production of antibodies may go down as the loss of appetite brings down the amount of nutrients entering the body.
Summer may turn bad for your health especially for your skin and digestion if you become lazy and careless about your diet and hydration.
It is the time to nourish your body with plenty of vitamins and minerals without adding extra pounds. Seasonal fruit and veggies are packed with powerful nutrients which give moisture to your skin, a healthier appearance and will make you less sensitive to the influences which come from nature, such as sun radiation or insects' bites.

MODIFY THE WAY YOU EAT
GO FOR small, frequent meals during the day. Don’t skip breakfast especially in summer because it prevents low blood pressure and dizziness during very hot days.
Keep your diet light and refreshing. It is the best time to have raw or minimally cooked food. Avoid too much oil, salt and pepper and go for fresh herbs and spices.
Cut down on fast and junk foods as they are fat laden and increase thirst. "Greasy and fatty foods are likely to increase discomfort during the summer because they take a longer time to digest. It’s best to keep your stomach in a happy state by giving it lighter food items like seasonal fruit and vegetables," says Ryan Fernando, Bangalore-based nutritionist and weight management expert.
Switch to lighter sources of protein like dairy foods. "Non-vegetarians can go for fish or egg whites but should try to cut down on red meat and chicken as they generate heat in the body," says Ryan. Also, cut down on dried fruit and sweets. Those of you with a sweet tooth can go for custard or kheer made from double toned milk.
Health Quotient: Get rid of negative thoughts, NOW!
Beat the heat by going for a variety of summer fruit like watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber, mango, chikoo, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries.
"The season's best offering is watermelon. Apart from its high moisture content, the fruit is a great fat burner. Don’t leave out the rind because it contains unusual amino acid L-citrulline which boosts energy levels, reduces fatigue and is a natural fat burner," says Ryan. The king of fruits mango also has some big advantages over other fruits.
Mango contains more fiber than other summer fruit, it’s low in calories, fat, and sodium, contains no cholesterol, and has more beta carotene than any other fruit.
Lastly, don’t miss out on citrus fruit which are juicy as well as cooling. "Lemon has the power of instantly replenishing your body's lost water. So go for a lemonade when you feel tired or dehydrated," says Ryan.
Include cold soups, large salads and sprouts to your summer diet. Go for legumes and Our vital organs work harder than usual during the summer to maintain healthy blood circulation, temperature regulation and digestion.
WORK OUT THE RIGHT WAY
THE right time to exercise or take a walk in summer is in the morning. Enjoy the outdoors and indulge in less strenuous activities to keep yourself healthy and energetic. This is more important for those living in this part of the world.
"People in hotter climates have a slower metabolism than those in the west which means whatever they eat add on to their fat reserve. This is the reason they should go for some kind of physical activity to boost their metabolism,” says Ryan.
However, don’t go for intensive workouts at a stretch especially on days when you are feeling weak or dizzy because both the exercise itself and the air temperature increase your body temperature. Instead, gradually increase the length and intensity of your workouts.
Use caution and common sense while exercising or gymming in hot weather to avoid heat-related illnesses. Fuel your body before you hit the gym.
"Your body demands energy on waking up which is non-existent after 7 or 9 hours of sleep," says Ryan. Have a glass of buttermilk as it has protein and carbs.
Young ones can have a cup of milk or an egg half an hour before going out. Those with low sugar can take tea with glucose biscuits. One of the myths surrounding exercising in summer is to avoid fluids during the workout. But most sports nutritionists advise hydration throughout a regimen. “ The more you delay hydration greater the damage you do to your muscles because exercise depletes them,” says Ryan.
Take small (20-30 ml) and frequent sips of water or nimbu pani or a sports drink. Don’t have more than 1 litre of fluid in an hour if you are a recreational athlete. Professionals can go for higher amounts as they sweat out heavily.
Lastly, don’t forget to replenish the body post workout because that’s the time when your body is most receptive to nutrition.
"To heal the muscles post workout feed your body within 180 minutes,” says Ryan. Go for a glass of lassi or buttermilk or milk or egg whites because these foods are immediately absorbed by the body and spike up energy levels instantly.
Our vital organs work harder than usual during the summer to maintain healthy blood circulation, temperature regulation and digestion.

iphone 4?????????

Why You Don't Need an iPhone 4: An Indian Perspective

Do you really need an iPhone, you'll wonder after going beyond the iPhone's reception issues and the unlocked iPhone vs. locked iPhone debate, and factoring in the looming iPhone 5 launch, along with it's expensive nature, it's limited potential for photography, and Android competition, as well as IOS on the iPod Touch

There's many reasons for not buying the iPhone 4. Reception, the locked vs. unlocked debate . . .it gets technical.
We at MensXP.com give you the simpler take on why you don't need an iPhone 4. If you thought the specs on the iPhone 4 were awesome, Apple MUST have a reason for the iPhone 5.
Maybe it's just better reception

iPhone 5

Yes. The iPhone 5 may come out sometime next year, and suddenly it'll be the same old wistful iPhone 3 owner's longing for the 3GS.
Would Steve Jobs willingly admit (or indirectly acknowledge) that the hottest tech event of the year is just to sell a bug fix that was the reception issue?

Or will it be a iPhone-Transformer® that literally destroys the competition?

Its Expensive
What exactly are you paying 40K for? The apps? You can get 'catch-em-all on your iPod Touch - about Rs. 15,000 or an iPad 2 (a giant iPhone!).

Or the camera?
if you really NEED the Photography apps, why not take your love for the megapixel into something more meaningful, man up and buy a real camera, dammit - something better and more versatile than 5MP.
Or get an N8 - 12 MP! The communication possibilities? Ha. Blackberry Messenger comes preloaded on all Blackberries.
It's Too Awesome for It's Own Good (Or is it?)
The status symbol? Only the most discerning can differentiate between an iPhone 3 and an iPhone 4 - that's how similar everyone in the i family is.

Get a Samsung Galaxy S II instead. It's cheaper, prettier and a worthy adversary, .
With Android's march into Apple territory, you'll soon find all your iPhone apps in little green robot versions.
And what if it gets stolen?
it is high-value merchandise, and Apple products are resold at a premium because of the awesome warranty. This is India - the cops don't care much, and you'll grieve, your entire life, I kid you not, that someone stole your iPhone. Friends will talk about it in hushed whispers as you walk through hallways. You'll doubt your capacity to guard a smartphone for the rest of your life.
The Same Apps on Your iPod Touch

I repeat this to emphasize - your iPod Touch is basically an iPhone without the phone. It has the same Operating System (whatever version of iOS is in fashion when you're reading this) and can run Angry Birds - I mean, give you access to powerful apps that can change your life etc.

No Radio

The feature that most Indians overlook, and then lament. Yes. No radio. No hits 95 FM or dhin-chika. You're actually going to spend your 3G subscription on Pandora?

oh heavy weight? no.....wanna loose some weight...here are top ten methods to reduce ur weight

ohhh heavy weight? loose some of it by following methods
1. Reduce caloric intake:
Nutritionists think that no matter what you control (such as protein, carbohydrate or fat), you finally reduce caloric intake. If a person reduces 800 cal intakes each day, he’ll lose 10 pounds within 6 weeks; if he reduces 500 cal intakes each day, he may lose 10 lbs within 2.5 months. But you must avoid reducing too quickly, otherwise it is very dangerous.
2. Eat less fat foods:
Experts say that 1 gram of fat is equal to 9 therm-calories. Compared with fat, the caloric contents of carbohydrate and protein calories per gram is much lower. Therefore, you don’t have to eat less. You can eat fresh vegetables, fruits, cereals in place of daily fatty foods, such as cream. Experts believe that if people can eat 20-40 grams of fat every day, they will lose 10 pounds within 2 months. But not every person can lose weight by less fat intake. If you take in too much carbohydrate, you’ll also become fat.

Liquid food should be diversification in order to avoid the lack of nutrition. Under the guidance of the doctor, you can even eat liquid food two meals a day. This can reduce 10 lbs in 5 in 5 weeks. But ensure that liquid food can provide nutrients and proteins for your body. Moreover, be sure to eat 3 meals a day.

CONTROL YOUR ANGER

Most of us find ourselves losing our tempers from time to time. The stresses and frustrations of everyday life can often lead to us venting our anger out on other people. This anger needs to be kept in check, as once it starts to become excessive, it will make your life a misery, as well as the lives of those around you. It will also have a negative effect on your health, and could even cost you your liberty in the end.
No, don't do it control your anger.........................here are some steps to control your anger
STEPS TO CONTROL YOUR ANGER
1. When you feel yourself about to do or say something rash, make yourself countdown from ten to zero before venting your anger. This brief period is often all you need to see things more reasonably.
2. Try calming yourself down by taking a few deep breathes. Breathe in and then slowly breathe out to a count of ten.
3. When you're angry you will usually feel pumped up. Displace this tension by doing something physically strenuous. Go for a run, a bike ride, lift weights, or anything that will burn off energy. Even punching a cushion or pillow is better than hitting a person or putting your fist through a door.
4. Try keeping your sense of humour and look at the funny side of life. You'll often find that many of the events in life that stress us out are often the things we look back on and laugh at, and give us our stories to tell.
5. When you start to feel yourself getting riled around other people, try putting yourself in their shoes. Imagine if the tables were turned and it was you about to be subjected to someone's temper tantrum.

The main point to remember is that controlling your temper doesn't mean bottling up your anger. If you have a problem with somebody, by all means have it out with him or her. Just make sure to do it in a rational and calm manner.
SHARE YOUR VIEWS WHEN YOU GET ANGRY AND HOW DO YOU CONTROL YOUR ANGER?
